What is the school like? |
|
Kurn Hattin's state-approved school for grades one through eight includes a computer lab, a well-stocked library, and a 300-seat auditorium. Cows, horses and a greenhouse on the farm provide hands-on lessons. Students are grouped according to their academic ability rather than by grade. This allows each child to feel both challenged and successful. |
| Where do the children sleep? |
| The children live together in cottages with nine or ten others in their age group and one houseparent. Every cottage provides a comfortable family-style atmosphere. There are two or three children in each bedroom. Children can arrange their furniture, decorate with posters or pictures from home, and bring toys, a radio and other items that will make their room feel comfortable. |
| What else can you tell me about the houseparent? |
|

Houseparents provide the children with the structure and support each child needs to succeed. They will welcome you into the cottage so you can see what they do and learn ways to take these skills home. Children are responsible for keeping their own room clean as well as doing assigned chores in the cottage and around campus. |
| What if my child gets sick? |
| Our nursing staff provides care for common illnesses and injuries in the campus infirmary. A child's family continues to be responsible for regular physicals, eye and dental exams and immunizations. |
| What does it cost? |
| Admission does not depend on a family's ability to pay. Our sliding fee scale can accommodate every family. |
| How often can I visit and what about holidays and weekends? |
| Most children go home one or two weekends a month and all school vacations. Because each family's needs are different we will work with you to decide what's best for you and your child. Our Family Outreach Program provides support, encouragement, a monthly newsletter for parents, help with transportation arrangements, Family Days and a whole lot more! It's hard having your child away from home and Family Outreach will help you be more involved in your child's life. You are welcome to visit your child on campus (rooms are available free of charge) and you may keep in touch with phone calls between visits. |
| What do children do after school? |
| Students are involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. For example, girls and boys participate in a first-rate music program that includes instrumental lessons for older students, a marching band, jazz band, concert band and choirs. Parades and community performances are part of being a Kurn Hattin musician. Our 280 acre campus offers plenty of space for exercise and fun: playing fields, and outdoor pool, gym, playgrounds and hiking trails. We offer soccer, basketball, baseball and cross-country running. |
