Westminster, VT and Keene, NH – Kurn Hattin Homes for Children continued its Career Awareness Program (CAP) with a return visit to a favorite destination: Fireworks Restaurant in downtown Keene. CAP is designed to introduce students to a diverse range of local businesses, providing real-world experiences that can inspire future educational and career choices.
The tour, hosted by Fireworks Manager Ayden Jacobs, began in the dining room and extended into the kitchen and behind-the-scenes operations. Students learned about the many roles that keep a restaurant running smoothly and discovered that it’s possible to start in entry-level positions and work up through the ranks.
After the tour, the hands-on experience continued as Kitchen Manager JT Barth invited into his “office” to teach students how to stretch and toss pizza dough—an art that’s trickier than it looks. Each student created their own pizza and gathered around the community table to enjoy their handmade lunch.
The visit offered students a new appreciation for the restaurant industry. Whether they pursue careers in food service or another industry, they’ll now walk into restaurants with a fresh perspective and a deeper respect for the work behind the scenes.
CAP will continue with visits to additional organizations including the Colonial Theatre, Winchester Water Department, and Len-Tex Corporation. To learn more or participate, contact Lorie Rogers at 802-721-6917 or lrogers@kurnhattin.org.
