About Kurn Hattin

We believe every child deserves a chance at a bright future.

Since 1894, Kurn Hattin Home and School for Children has offered new beginnings to children from families facing challenges. As a donor-supported, year-round residential and academic community, we provide structure, support, and belonging. Here, children ages 5–15 can discover their strengths and build toward a brighter future.

Located on 280 acres in Southern Vermont, our campus offers space to play, explore, and grow through sports, outdoor adventures, and creative discovery. Children reside on campus in cottages overseen by trained, supportive houseparents who are in close communication with their families.

Our state-approved K–8 school features small classes, experienced teachers, and an individualized approach to learning. Students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally, with a strong focus on building confidence, communication, and character.

From music and expressive arts to hands-on learning and life skills, children at Kurn Hattin find a nurturing environment where they can thrive.

New beginnings. Bright futures.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Kurn Hattin is a donor-supported organization. Parents/Guardians pay only what they can to support their child’s tuition.
  • Children remain in their parents’ (or guardian’s) custody. Kurn Hattin provides services to help the family heal, so that they can be reunited whenever possible.

Kurn Hattin is open year-round and offers on-campus housing, sports camps, and recreational activities through the summer months.
  • Our 280-acre campus includes a school, a farm and horse stable, a gymnasium, recreation center, outdoor pool, ball fields, and hiking trails.

Students come from across the Northeast including Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and New York.

Children live in comfortable residential cottages with 7 or 8 others in their age group. Two or three children share a bedroom. Children can arrange their furniture, decorate with posters or pictures from home, and bring toys, a radio, and other items that will make their room feel comfortable. Two full-time houseparents provide caring supervision in each cottage.

Our staff will work with you to decide what’s best for you and your child. Kurn Hattin can provide help with transportation and housing arrangements on campus during campus visits, and you may keep in touch with phone calls between visits.

Our Wellness Center staff provides care for common illnesses and injuries. A child’s family continues to be responsible for regular physicals, eye and dental exams, and immunizations.

Class sizes are small (8:1), and students are grouped according to academic level rather than by grade, allowing them to feel both challenged and successful. The farm provides hands-on lessons as part of the science curriculum. Students also participate in extra-curricular activities, including band, choir, arts and crafts, and competitive and intramural sports.

Many graduates return home and attend public high school. When this is not possible, we work with the family to find placement in a residential school with a mission similar to Kurn Hattin’s. Our Family Outreach Coordinator maintains contact and supports children and families after graduation.

We would be happy to discuss your child’s and your family’s needs. For more information, or to schedule a visit, please call Terry Andrews, Admissions Coordinator, at tandrews@kurnhattin.org or call (802) 721-6913.
