WESTMINSTER, VT—Kurn Hattin Homes for Children is pleased to announce the appointment of Melissa Marston as the organization’s new Assistant Executive Director. Following an extensive search, Marston was selected for her leadership experience in nonprofit child and family services, as well as her deep commitment to supporting youth and communities.
In her new role, Marston will oversee all departments directly related to child and family support, including school, residential life, counseling, admissions, outreach, and health services.
“Melissa brings a rare combination of strong people skills and a clear understanding of how data and metrics drive effective decision-making,” said Sue Kessler, Executive Director of Kurn Hattin Homes. “She will be focused on working with children and families, building relationships, listening, and bringing people into the process. I’m impressed by her energy, enthusiasm, and forward-thinking approach.”
A former Peace Corps volunteer and seasoned nonprofit leader, Marston has held leadership roles with organizations such as Playworks, Community Planning and Advocacy Council, and the Fulbright Teacher Exchanges through IREX. Her work has included community revitalization, positive youth development, trauma-informed practice, grant writing, strategic planning, and program monitoring and evaluation.
Throughout her career, Marston has been dedicated to supporting young people and the systems that shape their growth. “Positively impacting children on a large scale has been a longtime focus of my work. Kurn Hattin gives me the opportunity to champion the lives of children, their families, and the communities they come from,” said Marston. “I’m excited to build relationships and support them through their journeys.”
Originally from New Jersey and now relocating to Vermont, Marston brings with her a community-centered approach to leadership—as well as a loyal companion: her collie, Achilles. “I’ve received such a warm welcome in my first days here,” she said. “There is so much intentionality and support. People at Kurn Hattin pour their hearts into the mission— transforming the lives of children and families, every day. Transitioning to Westminster from Philadelphia, the community has given me valuable advice on where to get the best coffee, and farmers markets to visit, which has made me feel more at home.”
For children whose families face difficult circumstances, Kurn Hattin is a place of new beginnings and bright futures. “That resonates with me,” said Marston, “as this is not only a new beginning for me, but a new chapter for Kurn Hattin. I look forward to advocating for and highlighting the meaningful work Kurn Hattin is doing now, and the important goals we’re striving toward in the future.”
“I’m thrilled to have Melissa on board,” added Kessler. “Even in the short time she’s been here, her energy and potential are already making a positive impact.”
