April 7, 2011 | Westminster, Vermont– On Monday, April 5, 2011, New England Kurn Hattin Homes was presented with the Youth Activities Award by the National Headquarters of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States in recognition of their 2010-2011 youth group support of the US Military and their families.
There are three regular patriotic activities that Kurn Hattin has incorporated into their school curriculum that extends into community participation and in part has led to this award. We The People is a text book curriculum based around the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the systems of government, democracy and how our freedom is provided to us by defending our country. Secondly, many of the Kurn Hattin children participate in the annual Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, sponsored by the VFW, for which the goal is to promote Patriotism and understanding of the value and importance of the military in our lives in the past, present and future. And lastly, an annual event that Kurn Hattin is very proud of that is given in honor of Veterans’ Day, is a beautiful hour-long presentation, led by Kurn Hattin’s Richard Long, honoring our Veterans with a program which helps the audience to understand the importance of Patriotism and the support of our country, followed by a luncheon with the staff and children of Kurn Hattin.
Kurn Hattin Homes is a charitable, year-round home and school for in-need and at-risk children, ages 6-15, from throughout the Northeast.
