Kurn Hattin Homes’ middle school students were recently invited to visit the Len-Tex Corporation in N. Walpole, NH, where they experienced the step-by-step process of designing and producing their own high-end vinyl wallcoverings.
Len-Tex president and founder of the company, Don Lennon, hosted the tour that brought Kurn Hattin students through two of the company’s three locations. At the first stop, students were introduced to the design phase. They worked with CAD designer Dan Valerio who provided the guidance and computer-aided design (CAD) skills that resulted in the development of two unique patterns. While Dan and the students were collaborating, Lennon explained that Len-Tex designers continually monitor design trends around the world to ensure that their products will be current and desirable to customers. So, with their imaginations stimulated, students developed a colorful fox-themed wallcovering and another featuring hearts, stars, and jellyfish that they labeled Mystical Wonderland. Could it be the next big design trend?
The second part of the Len-Tex tour brought the students through printing and production areas in the manufacturing facility. The students were able to see firsthand how the process comes full circle and learn how a concept becomes a tangible reality.
While the students were fascinated with the multi-phased process, they unanimously agreed that creating their own wallcovering was really cool and that it was the highlight of the visit. (Their custom wallcoverings were on display, along with other Kurn Hattin student art work, at the Keene Art Walk from June 2-11.)
Field trips such as this one to Len-Tex are great student motivators. They open young minds to new ideas and encourage them to think about where their path forward might lead. One student, who excels in art at Kurn Hattin, was able to see a concrete example of how her talent could be applied to a productive profession. The takeaway question for all, however, is: How can you turn your interests and talents into a successful future and a rewarding career?
If your business would like to offer an opportunity for Kurn Hattin Homes’ students to learn outside the classroom, please contact Sue Kessler, Assistant Executive Director, at skessler@kurnhattin.org.
