Earlier this year, the boys in Turrell Cottage at Kurn Hattin Homes learned to make walking sticks. They hiked into the woods, selected and sawed small trees, scraped, sanded, stained and added their personalized designs with a burning tool.
Recently these walking sticks came in handy during a brisk walk in the woods to Kurn Hattin Homes’ outdoor classroom. While walking, the children collected birch bark and kindling for a fire at the outdoor classroom, where they cooked hot dogs and had some hot chocolate. “Two hours later we were back at the cottage talking about how awesome that was,” remarked Bob Anderson, Turrell Cottage houseparent. It’s fun and educational to get outdoors!
