On June 6, Kurn Hattin Home and School for Children saw six eighth-grade students cross the stage to become the Class of 2026 at this year’s Commencement Exercises. A traditional processional, flag salute, congratulatory remarks, and musical performances celebrated the graduates and their accomplishments.
Families, staff, alumni, trustees, and supporters were welcomed at the start of the ceremony by Board Vice President Eric Velto. With student performances—including the graduates’ rendition of Ode to Joy—a central theme of the day, Velto encouraged graduates to carry forward the lessons music teaches: patience, perseverance, teamwork, and self-expression.
The unique journeys of each graduate were reflected upon by Executive Director Sue Kessler, who expressed that their “hard work, courage, and determination” have brought them to this moment. Student speakers followed, including Valedictorian Emmery Dundore, who likened her journey to a garden flourishing under care and support: “Kurn Hattin taught me to believe in myself and keep trying.” Salutatorian Dezeray Green, equally appreciative, shared a quote from dancer Misty Copeland: “Anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you.”
The ceremony also included a special tribute to Director of Music Lisa Bianconi, who is retiring after 40 years of service. Her remarkable contributions to generations of children were honored with a standing ovation.
As the graduates were presented their diplomas and formally inducted into the Kurn Hattin Alumni Association, the ceremony celebrated not only academic achievement, but also the persistence, friendships, and personal growth that define the Kurn Hattin experience.
The Class of 2026 includes Issac James Billue, Emmery Lashea Dundore, Dezeray Christine Green, Aria Lee Norway, Kahlan Danielle Riker, and Jocelynn Leigh Smith.
