This Vermont State Approved Independent Elementary and Middle School academic program helps children gain valuable skills through connecting and applying what they learn to the outside world.
Classrooms are equipped with computers and state-of-the-art educational technology to maximize and support learning.
A working farm, apple orchard, and maple sugar house provide opportunities to develop analytical skills through hands-on experience in the farm science program.
In addition, Kurn Hattin offers an outstanding range of extra-curricular programs where students can explore personal interests and develop useful skills in a hands-on environment.
Students are grouped by academic ability rather than by grade. This allows each child to feel both challenged and successful while working at their own pace. While Kurn Hattin strives to meet the individual learning needs of each child, the academic program does not offer special education services nor direct Individual Education Plan (IEP) support.
An average 8:1 student to teacher ratio allows teachers to provide individualized support in order to meet each student’s needs.
Integrated throughout all programs at Kurn Hattin, this program focuses on developing essential skills for successful interaction with others, such as making friends, dealing with transitions, respecting others, and working out problems by talking rather than fighting.
Our experienced, caring staff take the time to learn the unique background and needs of each child and family, so that we can provide optimal care and individualized support to help all children reach their full potential.
Once enrolled, teachers, residential staff, and counselors form a dedicated support network to help each child adjust and succeed in all areas of development; academic, physical, social, and emotional. Ongoing communication with the child’s family is an important key to success.
Caitlin Tramontina serves as Dean of Students at Kurn Hattin Home and School for Children, where she helps shape a school environment grounded in belonging, accountability, and growth.
Caitlin specializes in developing and upholding clear behavior expectations that support a safe, consistent community. She works closely with students as they navigate friendships, manage emotions, and learn to take responsibility for their choices. Her approach balances high expectations with compassion—ensuring that students feel both supported and challenged as they grow.
Before stepping into her current role, Caitlin taught second and third grade at Kurn Hattin. Her classroom experience continues to inform her work today, giving her a deep understanding of students’ developmental needs and the importance of strong adult relationships.
“I care deeply about building strong relationships, fostering a sense of belonging, and creating environments where people feel supported, challenged, and valued,” Caitlin says.
Outside of work, Caitlin recharges by reading, staying active through outdoor activities and organized sports, and spending time with her family.
